Current Ocean Rate Levels Suggest Potential for Capacity Reduction
October 2011 - Studies of rates on Transpacific and Asia-Europe trades show levels close to those of 2009, and decisions by carriers to artificially cut liner capacity may be imminent. Recent attempts by carriers to apply rate increases and peak season surcharges have been generally unsuccessful; many increases have been announced and/or implemented for a short time, but no substantial increases remain. It is possible, perhaps even likely, that carriers will soon begin to suspend capacity on these trades in an effort to drive freight rates up to profitable levels.
