CPSC to Position Staff at Long Beach Port
At a press conference on March 5th, the Consumer Products Safety Commission announced that the port of Long Beach California will be the first to have permanent CPSC staff on its premises. As part of a new initiative to expand its presence at major U.S. ports of entry, the CPSC has formed an “Import Surveillance Division” to work in greater harmony with U.S. Customs & Border Protection to inspect, detect, and thwart hazardous consumables from entering the U.S. marketplace. According to CPSC representatives, the agency will utilize the CBP electronic database to quickly identify shipments which may pose potential problems and will initiate greater sampling and testing of suspect cargo.
