U. S. Department of Commerce Recognizes VPA for Export Efforts

Norfolk, VA – The Port of Virginia on Monday, Aug. 14, received the U. S. Department of Commerce’s Export Achievement Award, an honor recognizing the Virginia Port Authority’s (VPA) efforts to facilitate the export of American-made goods.

“This port, from my standpoint, represents what is right about trade, and specifically the export side of the business,” said David Spooner, assistant secretary of the U. S. Department of Commerce. “The continual improvements to the facilities here; the consistent effort to develop trade with other nations; a commitment to security and efficiency and the positive, progressive environment for international trade that exists here more than qualify the port for this award. ”

The award was presented by Assistant Secretary Spooner who, along with Virginia Congresswoman Thelma Drake and VPA officials, toured Norfolk International Terminals. The terminal is one of three deep-water marine terminal owned and operated by the VPA, the others are Newport News Marine Terminal and Portsmouth Marine Terminal. Jeff Keever, the VPA’s deputy executive director, accepted the award on behalf of the VPA.

The Export Achievement Award is presented to U. S. companies that have benefited from the Department’s Commercial Service export assistance to make their first export sale or open new foreign markets.

“For years The Port of Virginia may have been the best kept secret in the shipping industry, but no more,” Congresswoman Drake said. “The effort that has been put into making The Port of Virginia the top facility on the East Coast is really paying off for the state and for the port’s customers. I think we’re just beginning to see the success of what we have here in Hampton Roads. ”

Spooner oversees the Commerce Department’s Import Administration, which ensures a level playing field for America’s industries in the competitive global market, and enforces laws and agreements to prevent unfairly traded imports.

Based on containers, The Port of Virginia’s import/export trade balance for 2003, ’04 and ’05 was 49 percent and 51 percent, respectively.
