Venetia Huffman featured in Shipping Digest
Venetia Huffman, CVI vice president of operations & compliance, was recently featured in the November 5, 2007 issue of Shipping Digest. Written by editor, William Armbruster, the article was entitled “Horror Stories,” and highlights the current nightmares and crisis surrounding the import demurrage situation. Venetia was interviewed by Mr. Armbruster and shared two stories of import clients who had suffered extreme problems with container demurrage as a result of government inspection delays. As steamship carriers and terminal operators struggle with the demands of increased import volumes, such horror stories are becoming more frequent as U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture also increase their numbers of inspections in response to political pressure and security enforcement demands.
The Shipping Digest article was a follow up to Ms. Huffman’s participation in a panel discussion titled “Demurrage on Government Holds: Perception vs. Reality” which took place at the East Coast Maritime Conference in September 2007 and was sponsored by the Journal of Commerce.
